Help from our Consultants: Prevent a Scribe Insight server from accessing a production CRM organization

If you ever set up a Test or development Scribe Insight server, you may need to ensure that you or someone else in your organization doesn't accidentally setup or run an integration and update data in your production Microsoft Dynamics CRM Environment.

A quick and easy way to do this is to utilize a method of redirecting the CRM URL to the Scribe Insight server address (this assumes that you are either connecting to a Microsoft Dynamics CRM Online server or have Microsoft Dynamics CRM On-Premise installed on a separate server than what Scribe Insight is installed on).

The steps to do this are the following (assuming you are logged in as an administrator on the Scribe Insight Server):

1.  Navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc\ and right click on the Hosts file and choose properties.  Uncheck the read-only attribute.

2.  Right click on the Hosts file and choose open, opening it in Notepad.

3.  Add a new line at the very bottom of the file and add in this line (assuming your CRM Online production org is at https://contoso.crm.dynamics.com):

127.0.0.1    contoso.crm.dynamics.com

4.  Save and close the hosts file.

5.  Note that you can test that this is working by opening Internet Explorer and attempting to navigate to the CRM web site, i.e. https://contoso.crm.dynamics.com in this example.  You should get either the local website if you have IIS installed on the Scribe Insight server or a page cannot be displayed error.

If this method is made, this change should be noted in your server change logs in case you ever repurpose the Scribe Insight test server to be utilized for production purposes since this change would block access to the production Microsoft CRM Server URL.
